Corey, a 30-year-old right-hander, had a 3.38 ERA in 10 appearances for Iowa.

“It’s in the works,” the 30-year-old right-hander said. “There’s been some talk about going to Japan, but my goal right now is to get to Chicago.” Corey wouldn’t be a bad 11th or 12th pitcher on a lesser team, but the Cubs probably won’t need him.

Have any of these kind of pitching pickups ever worked out for Boston during the Theo Epstein era? Corey, 32, spent most of his career in the minors until compiling a 2.60 ERA in 17 1/3 innings for the Rangers this season. The Red Sox didn’t give up anything they’re likely to miss in Mendoza, but Corey doesn’t figure to be of any real help. The club will make room for him by placing Manny Delcarmen on the DL or sending down Jermaine Van Buren.

Corey was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Aug. 5 and initially became a free agent after clearing waivers. He might be up to join the team’s pen in September.

Just six days after he was acquired from the Rangers. If the Rays are still trying to tweak the Red Sox, perhaps they could claim Corey off waivers. It’s one of the benefits of always being in last place.

Better if they had decided to give Wes Littleton a real opportunity. Corey, 32, pitched briefly in the majors with the Diamondbacks in 1998 and the Rockies in 2002. He also spent some time in Japan. It’s unlikely that he’ll be of much use as a middle reliever.

Corey, who was up for six days after being acquired from the Rangers on July 30, will get a chance to contribute as a middle reliever. He’s given up six runs in 18 1/3 innings for the Rangers and Red Sox.

Corey went to Japan in May and had a 5.48 ERA in 21 relief appearances for Yomiuri. He’ll probably spend next year at Triple-A Albuquerque.

Corey spent time with Texas and Boston in 2006, amassing a 4.57 ERA in 21 2/3 innings with the Red Sox. He handles lefties well because of his changeup, so it’s going to be up to Terry Francona to use him correctly.

Corey has a 2.11 ERA in 19 appearances for Mazatlan The 30-year-old right-hander had a 2.97 ERA in 60 appearances for Triple-A Las Vegas last season. Some team might give him a chance to compete for a bullpen job next spring.
