Bucky Jacobsen is scheduled to have surgery on his right knee today.
Jacobsen, who will have a defect in his articular cartilage repaired, will miss the rest of the season but should be ready to compete for a starting job in 2005.

Bucky Jacobsen’s knee surgery performed yesterday, was a success.
Jacobsen should be ready to report to spring training on time. He has the inside track on winning the job as the Mariners’ DH next season.

Bucky Jacobsen isn’t 100 percent yet following September knee surgery, but he should be ready to compete for a job in spring training.
“It used to be sore after a workout, now it is just tired,” he said. “I can feel it getting stronger walking up steps.” Jacobsen is likely to start at DH against lefties this season. He could win a full-time job if Jeremy Reed has a poor spring.

Bucky Jacobsen, who will spend the spring working his way back from knee surgery, isn’t guaranteed a spot on the Seattle bench.
''He just started running, and you want to be careful with him,’' GM Bill Bavasi said. ''You’d like to go wire to wire without injuries, but you don’t, so you need depth in the majors or minors.’' If Jacobsen shows he’s healthy and still doesn’t make the team, it will only be because the Mariners refuse to eat Scott Spiezio’s contract. Jacobsen needs to be the club’s designated hitter against left-handed pitchers.

Bucky Jacobsen will get his first major league start tonight as the Mariners’ designated hitter against Indian’s lefthander Cliff Lee.
Edgar Martinez may begin to lose some playing time as the Mariners’ want to assess Jacobsen, who is defensively limited. The 41-year-old Martinez may consent to being traded to a contender, something he has not been willing to do in the past.

If the Mariners do trade John Olerud, they could promote minor league slugger Bucky Jacobsen.
Jacobsen could get a chance to audition for at least a part-time role as the Mariners’ DH next season after a montser first half at Triple-A Tacoma. In 79 games Jacobsen hit 24 homers and registered 79 RBI. At 28, he is a little old to be a prospect, but he could be a solid right-handed hitting platoon batter in the majors.

If the Mariners place Raul Ibanez on the disabled list today as expected, Bucky Jacobsen is a candidate to be called up from Triple-A Tacoma.
Jacobsen, a 28-year-old journeyman first basemen, hit two home runs last night for the Rainiers and has 46 RBI in 43 games in Class AAA. Jamal Strong (.321 at Tacoma) is also being considered. However, the Mariners may choose to add a pitcher to their roster instead of a hitter.

Bucky Jacobsen has several medical conditions, most significantly fluid in his right knee, that limit his playing first base to as little as once a week.
If Jacobsen has to DH to keep his bat in the lineup, Edgar Martinez may have to see some time at first base. Jacbosen has a 971 OPS and five home runs since being called up.

Bucky Jacobsen (knee) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI yesterday for Single-A Inland Empire.
Jacobsen will rejoin the Mariners later this month and likely take over as the designated hitter against left-handers. Raul Ibanez will play left field when Jacobsen starts.

Bucky Jacobsen (knee) is hitting .571 (12-for-21) in his minor league rehab assignment at Single-A.
Jacobsen may get a promotion to Triple-A Tacoma soon.
