Carlyle

The deal does not come with an invitation to spring training, meaning Carlyle will be in minor league camp one month from now. He posted a 4.70 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in eight relief appearances last year with the Yankees before being released in August. The Braves probably aren’t expecting much from him.

Carlyle spent all of 2012 at Triple-A with the Braves, posting a 3.43 ERA and nice 73/14 K/BB ratio over 76 innings. He’ll represent minor league depth.

Carlyle, who is still just 26 even though he’s five years removed from his major league debut, went 8-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 18 starts and one relief appearance for Triple-A Columbus last season. He should spent the year in the Las Vegas rotation.

The deal does not include an invitation to major league spring training. Carlyle, 36, last pitched in the majors in 2011 and posted a 3.86 ERA and 76/20 K/BB ratio in 56 innings with the Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate last year.

Carlyle will be in charge of handling replay review decisions. In other words, he’s decided to retire from baseball. The 38-year-old posted a 5.14 ERA across parts of nine big league seasons.

Carlyle has been out since mid-May with back spasms and is also nursing a hip ailment. There’s no timetable for the reliever’s return.

Carlyle went on the disabled list back in mid-May with back spasms, but the hip became a bigger concern. The veteran reliever will be a free agent after the season and will turn 38 in December.

Carlyle had to leave an appearance Monday after experiencing stiffness in his lower back and hadn’t shown much improvement over the last two days. Relief depth will probably be on the way from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Carlyle injured his back in a relief appearance on Monday night. It’s not yet clear how long he might be out. Jack Leathersich is taking the vacant bullpen spot.

The move clears space for Jenrry Mejia’s return from suspension. Carlyle still isn’t throwing as he works his way back from back and hip issues.
