Mazzoni has primarily pitched as a starter in the minors, but Collins is intrigued by his arsenal and believes he could be an asset out of the bullpen. Given the team’s depth in the starting rotation, it could be where he ends up in the long-term. The 24-year-old posted a 4.36 ERA and 74/19 K/BB ratio over 66 innings in Double-A last season prior to a knee injury.

Mazzoni elected to become a free agent after getting pushed off the Padres’ 40-man roster in late April, but returning to the same organization wound up as his best option. He got lit up for 22 runs -- 20 earned -- in just 8 2/3 innings last season with San Diego and needed shoulder surgery over the winter. There won’t be a promotion for him anytime soon.

After giving up a three-run homer to Charlie Blackmon, Diaz threw inside on LeMahieu before hitting him with the next pitch. Benches cleared as a result, but no punches were thrown.
