Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that prospect right-hander Cory Mazzoni will get consideration for the Opening Day roster as a reliever.
Mazzoni has primarily pitched as a starter in the minors, but Collins is intrigued by his arsenal and believes he could be an asset out of the bullpen. Given the team’s depth in the starting rotation, it could be where he ends up in the long-term. The 24-year-old posted a 4.36 ERA and 74/19 K/BB ratio over 66 innings in Double-A last season prior to a knee injury.
