David Freese was placed on the 10-day disabled list in a corresponding move. The 27-year-old Ortiz will be making his major league debut. He was batting just .217/.266/.233 with zero homers and three RBI at Triple-A. He hit 17 home runs in each of the last two years in the minors. He will serve as bench depth for the Pirates.

Ortiz was up for one day and didn’t make an appearance. He’s being replaced on the roster by catcher John Bormann.

Frazier drove in four runs Thursday but is on the bench a day later. Danny Ortiz is getting the first start of his career in left field.

Ortiz went 1-for-12 during his short stay at the major league level. Gregory Polanco (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list in a corresponding 25-man roster move.

Ortiz will give the Pirates much-needed outfield depth while Gregory Polanco recovers from a left hamstring strain. Ortiz, 27, was batting just .253/.304/.295 through 27 games this season at the Triple-A level.

Ortiz cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. The 27-year-old will continue to serve as outfield depth in the minors.

Ortiz went 1-for-12 during two stints with the Bucs earlier this season and the 27-year-old outfielder was batting just .259 with a .291 on-base percentage in 86 games at Triple-A Indianapolis. He will probably pass through waivers unclaimed.

Ortiz was 4-for-20 (.200) with zero walks and six strikeouts through 17 games this spring in the Grapefruit League. The 28-year-old will function as organizational outfield depth for the Phillies in 2018.

Ortiz was outrighted off the Pirates’ 40-man roster in early August after going 1-for-12 in a couple different stints at the major league level. He spent the majority of the 2017 season in Triple-A, batting .270/.303/.457 with 15 home runs and 63 RBI in 110 games.
