David Freese announced his retirement on Saturday.
This move is a bit surprising considering 2019 was the best season of his career by some measures. He set new career highs with a .315 batting average, a .403 on-base percentage and a .599 slugging percentage this year with the Dodgers, although those numbers came in just 186 plate appearances over 79 games. He was used sparingly in ideal situations but there is no reason why a team couldn’t do that for him again next year if was willing to stick around. The 36-year-old will hang up his cleats with a career .277/.351/.423 slash line with 113 home runs and 535 RBI in 11 seasons. He played for the Cardinals, Angels, Pirates and Dodgers. He made the All Star team in 2012 with the Cardinals.
