Relaford

Relaford got a start in right field Friday because of Dee Brown’s injury. Most of his playing time will come at the middle infield positions.

''Febles is my second baseman,’' Pena said. ''Nothing has changed. I just wanted to get Desi in there. I’m going to use Desi a lot in a lot of different roles.’' Febles did get into the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth.

The Rockies are promising Relaford plenty of playing time. “There were no smoke and mirrors,” Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. “I told him he would have a chance to start 40 to 50 games at shortstop, and there will be starts at second base, third and the outfield. It’s a land of opportunity.”

Relaford has a .435 on-base percentage and three stolen bases. He could very easily become the starting shortstop if Angel Berroa can’t improve on his .182 batting average.

Colorado beat out the Rangers, Cubs and Mets for Relaford’s services.

Relaford set career highs in at-bats, runs, hits, RBI and stolen bases this season. He expects to have his arm in a cast for six weeks. He should return as the Royals’ starting second baseman next season.

Relaford has yet to play because of bunion problems on his right foot.

Relaford has yet to make an appearance in a game this spring. He’s guaranteed a spot on the Royals, but he can’t compete for playing time unless he plays.

Relaford could return during the Indians’ series April 20-22. The Royals are quite pleased with what Tony Graffanino has given them so far, so Relaford may have to be content with sharing second base.

Tony Graffanino will see regular playing time in Relaford’s absence and is a fine option in AL-only leagues. The Royals are expected to add a 12th pitcher to their staff.
