Robinson, who survived a suicide attempt and returned to play professional baseball with only one eye, will join the Giants’ front office as a mental health advocate for players. The 29-year-old outfielder finishes his career having played in exactly 100 games at the major-league level. He’s been a truly inspiring figure in the game over the last few years, and will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the next generation of Bay Area big leaguers in his new role moving forward.

Robinson, who spent the 2019 season in the Cardinals’ organization, underwent a “progressive” Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in early August to repair a partially torn UCL. He’s expected to be ready for the start of spring training. Robinson is a career .202/.296/.359 hitter with nine homers and 22 RBI in 253 plate appearances at the big league level.

Robinson underwent surgery earlier this month for a partially torn UCL in his left elbow. Acquired from the Rangers last December for Patrick Wisdom, the 27-year-old appeared in just five games this season with St. Louis.

It was not a full UCL repair and the hope is that Robinson will be ready for the start of spring training next year. The 27-year-old utilityman spent the large majority of the 2019 season at Triple-A Memphis, after being acquired from the Rangers for Patrick Wisdom in December 2018.

The move clears a spot for Tuesday’s starter, Daniel Ponce de Leon. Robinson is 1-for-7 over five games with the Cardinals this season.

Robinson is 0-for-6 with three strikeouts in a couple different stints at the major league level this season. The versatile 27-year-old will serve as a backup at multiple positions for the Cardinals.

Robinson has already been up and down a couple of times this year while going 0-for-6 with three strikeouts. The 26-year-old will continue to function as depth in the minors.

Robinson made the Opening Day roster but didn’t receive any starts before being sent down. He’s up as outfield protection with Harrison Bader (hamstring) banged up.

Robinson didn’t receive any starts in his week with the big club. The Cards are expected to activate Jedd Gyorko (calf) off the injured list prior to Friday’s home opener.

Gyorko was limited to just 10 plate appearances this spring because of a calf issue. He figures to be ready to return sometime in April. Drew Robinson and Yairo Munoz will both make the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster with Gyorko injured.
