Braves signed INF-OF Drew Sutton to a minor league contract.
Sutton flashed potential this year with the Red Sox, batting .315/.362/.444 in 60 plate appearances. The 28-year-old journeyman will try to claim a bench spot with the Braves in spring training.

Pirates acquired INF-OF Drew Sutton from the Braves for cash considerations; assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Sutton, who signed a minor league deal with Atlanta in November, flashed potential last year with the Red Sox, batting .315/.362/.444 in 60 plate appearances. The 29-year-old journeyman hit .270/.374/.372 in 38 games at Triple-A Gwinnett this year. He’ll likely serve as a backup infielder in Indy.
  • BOS Outfield
Pirates sent INF-OF Drew Sutton outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Sutton passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week. The 29-year-old switch-hitter is batting .254/.292/.393 over 130 plate appearances in the big leagues (between the Pirates and Rays) this season.
  • TEX 1st Baseman
Carlos Pena is batting leadoff again Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Why the heck not? Pena started out of the leadoff spot Tuesday for the first time in his career and went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer. Speaking of unconventional, Rays manager Joe Maddon has third baseman Drew Sutton in the cleanup spot Wednesday.
  • MIA Third Base Coach #13
Sean Rodriguez is not in Wednesday’s lineup against the Blue Jays.
Just a routine day off for Rodriguez, who is hitting .300 (21-for-70) with three homers and nine RBI this month. The recently-acquired Drew Sutton will start in his place at the hot corner and bat cleanup (yes, cleanup) against left-hander Ricky Romero.

Pirates designated INF-OF Drew Sutton for assignment.
Sutton batted .254/.292/.393 over 130 plate appearances for the Rays and Pirates this year. Sutton, who signed a minor league deal with Atlanta in November, was traded to the Pirates in May, swapped to the Rays a day later, DFA’d by Tampa in June and subsequently claimed by Pittsburgh. The switch-hitter will likely be on the move to a new organization in the next few days.
  • CWS Outfield #47
Alex Presley (concussion-like symptoms) is not in Wednesday’s lineup.
Presley left Tuesday’s game with concussion-like symptoms after trying to making a diving catch in left field. The Pirates are currently waiting on test results. Drew Sutton will start in his place Wednesday while Garret Jones plays right.
  • BOS Outfield
Rays acquired INF-OF Drew Sutton from the Pirates for a player to be named later.
Sutton was traded less than 24 hours ago from the Braves to the Bucs, and is now headed off to Tampa Bay. The 29-year-old switch-hitter owns a .270/.374/.372 batting line in 38 games this year at the Triple-A level. He should see some action at third base with the Rays.
  • BOS Outfield
Pirates claimed INF-OF Drew Sutton off waivers from the Rays.
The Pirates traded Sutton to the Rays a month ago, but now they’ve gotten him back. He’ll be used in a utility role in Pittsburgh.
  • BOS Outfield
Rays designated INF-OF Drew Sutton for assignment.
He batted .271/.314/.354 over 18 games with the big club. There’s a chance Sutton will be claimed off waivers, but, either way, he should get another shot in the majors with someone this season.
