Pirates called up RHP Ian Snell yesterday.
Snell will be used in relief the rest of the season.

Starting in place of Kip Wells, Ian Snell gave up six runs in two-plus innings today in a loss to the Dodgers.
Snell was fine through two innings, but he gave up six singles and a walk to start the bottom of the third inning. Including one game at the end of last season, Snell has a 14.25 ERA in his three career starts. It’s possible that he’ll be sent back to the minors.

Ian Snell is a candidate to replace Josh Fogg in the starting rotation.
''As of right now, Ian’s back in the bullpen,’' manager Lloyd McClendon said. ''As we speak.’' Fogg is currently scheduled for tomorrow, but Snell may get the call instead.

Pirates optioned RHP Ian Snell to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Snell struggled in his two starts, but he had a 4.00 ERA in his 10 relief appearances. He’ll be back in September.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher
Ian Snell will make the first of what is expected to be three starts for Triple-A Indianapolis tonight against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
He is expected to be one of the Pirates’ recalls next month.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher
Ian Snell took a loss against the Cubs on Sunday after yielding five runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Snell struck out six and walked two, but the Cubs timed their hits well to convert 5-of-10 baserunners into scores. Since Snell had been pitching well of late, a matchup against the weak hitting clubs seemed like a nice spot start in many leagues. However, this type of inconsistency can still be expected from Snell and he remains a risky option against any opponent.

Ian Snell pitched the Pirates past the Cardinals by allowing two runs in seven innings on Saturday.
He struck out six while picking up his 10th win on his third try. Albert Pujols homered to give the Cardinals their only two runs. Snell has a 4.67 ERA and a 122/52 K/BB ratio in 138 2/3 innings this season.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher
Ian Snell improved to 5-3 by holding the Brewers to one run in six innings of work on Wednesday.
Snell walked and struck out a pair, but the Brewers managed just three hits against him tonight. He’ll continue to mix promising outings with disappointing ones, making him a frustrating player to own in NL-only leagues. Snell has two starts next week, but since the first one is at Coors Field he should probably be benched.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher
Ian Snell blanked the Giants for seven innings on Saturday to improve to 7-3 this season.
Snell has won his last five starts, although only in the last three has he really pitched well. Over the course of the year, he’s had six quality starts in 13 tries. Snell gets the Pujols-less Cardinals next. He a risky play in NL-only leagues, but there are certainly worse gambles.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher
Ian Snell gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Astros tonight but still picked up the win in a 12-5 game.
Snell struck out seven and walked two but also gave up 10 hits, two of which went for homers. Snell has given up 70 hits in 52 2/3 innings of work despite posting 44 strikeouts during that span. His 5.98 ERA should come down as his hit rate normalizes, but Snell is still too risky to use versus the Brewers next week.
