Jake Peavy, who struggled on Friday, reported no problems with the rib muscle that troubled him during his June 28 start.
Manager Bruce Bochy didn’t seem to believe him, saying Peavy’s next start might be rescheduled with the All-Star break approaching. ''We could shuffle the rotation going into the break after we see how Jake feels in his next bullpen,’' said Bochy.

Jake Peavy needs to average just over five innings a start in each of his last three games to claim the NL ERA title.
Peavy has a 2.40 ERA, but lags behind in innings because of time missed due to injury.

If Jake Peavy can throw 42 more innings this season, he could become the first Padres’ pitcher since Randy Jones in 1975 to win an ERA title.
Peavy, whose ERA stands at 2.24, will only start on normal rest, but because of off days he will often be moved ahead of the No. 5 starter. He’s due for 6-7 more starts this season and is a valuable starter in all formats.

Padres GM Kevin Towers said he abd Jake Peavy have agreed to terms on a four-year contract that would guarantee the right-hander $15 million.
There’s an option for 2009, which is the first year Peavy is eligible for free agency. Towers said the club will announce the pact after finalizing an insurance policy.

Jake Peavy said he and the Padres are closing in on a multiyear deal.
''We’re at a point where we feel like we can get this done,’' said agent Barry Axelrod. ''I think we have a real chance to do this before the renewal date (on March 2).’' According to Axelrod, if nothing gets done before the renewal date, talks will be tabled until he becomes eligible for salary arbitration after this season.

The Padres and Jake Peavy will revisit talks on a multiyear deal this month.
A four-year contract has been discussed. ''If we get something done, great,’' GM Kevin Towers said. ''If not, it’s not the end of the world. He’s not a free agent until after six full seasons.’' That’d be the winter of 2008 for Peavy.

Jake Peavy threw off the mound yesterday for the first time since a sore oblique sidelined him a week ago.
Pitching coach Darren Balsley said Peavy, “looked great.” He’ll make his spring debut March 12.

Manger Bruce Bochy said Jake Peavy had strained an oblique muscle late in his pregame throwing session prior to pitching eight scoreless innings Saturday against the Mariners.
Peavy was cleared after being examined, but he said afterward he felt dull pain near his belly throughout the game. It clearly didn’t bother him much, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Jake Peavy was led by talk-radio media members yesterday to believe he was on the verge of being traded to the Pirates.
Peavy laughed it off, but Padres’ GM Kevin Towers was upset. ''Ninety-nine percent of the rumors out there have zero truth to them,’' Towers said. Whether Peavy is involved or not, it does appear that the Pirates and Padres continue to talk.

Padres shut down Jake Peavy yesterday and downgraded him to questionable for March 4.
Peavy was slated to start against Seattle to open the exhibition season. He reported tightness in his left oblique before and after his throwing session on Saturday, so the team is taking a precaution with him.
