Carkuff was acquired from the Blue Jays this winter as part of the Yangervis Solarte trade, but the former 35th-round pick had registered a 6.00 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and 25/11 K/BB ratio over 24 innings this season between three different levels of the Padres’ minor league system.

Carkuff was a 35th-round pick of the Jays in the 2016 MLB Draft. A reliever, he posted a 3.86 ERA over 63 innings while reaching Triple-A this past season. He could move quickly for the Padres.
