Double-A Altoona’s Javier Guzman went 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI yesterday.
Guzman is hitting .396 in 12 games since being moved up to Altoona. He hit .324/.374/.488 in 69 games for Single-A Lynchburg. It’s pretty much guaranteed he won’t be left available in the Rule 5 draft again this winter.
  • PIT Shortstop
Pirates purchased the contract of SS Javier Guzman, INF Yurendell De Caster, RHP Josh Sharpless and 2B Craig Stansberry.
Guzman is the best bet in this group. As Jack Wilson gets more expensive, Guzman could take over at shortstop in two or three years. De Caster’s addition is a surprise. The Pirates must disagree, but he’s not a very good bet to make it as a utilityman.
  • PIT Shortstop
Single-A Lynchburg’s Javier Guzman went 3-for-4 and hit his first two homers yesterday.
Guzman, 21, seemed like a candidate to go in the December Rule 5 draft, but since he’s still so far away, no team felt it was worth stashing him away. He could be a regular shortstop by mid-2007 or 2008.
