31-year-old outfielder Jaylin Davis announced his retirement from baseball on Instagram.
Davis played in 38 big-league games from 2019-2022. The first 26 of those came with the Giants, and he hit .159/.221/.270. However, he did have a nice little stint with the Red Sox in 2022, batting .333/.407/.375 in 27 plate appearance. He’d spent the last two years playing indy ball, so the writing was on the wall. Still, he was a fine Triple-A player who could have been a fine Triple-A player for a few additional seasons if not for contraction in the minor leagues.

Davis inked a minor league contract with the Mets back in February and didn’t end up making an appearance for New York in the majors. The 29-year-old outfielder got into 12 contests last year for the Red Sox and profiles as a reserve outfielder at this stage of his career.

The 28-year-old slashed .333/.407/.375 with two RBI across 27 plate appearances for the Boston Red Sox. His time in the majors was limited as the Red Sox were fighting for a wild card spot into the second half of the season. While in Triple-A Worcester, Davis hit .203/.312/.334 with seven homers. He’ll head into free agency and should be able to sign a minor league deal with a team this offseason.

Davis has played sparingly for the Red Sox over the last few weeks since being called up from Triple-A Worcester, getting into just 12 contests since July 23. He’ll head back to the minors to wait for another opportunity at the highest level.

Jarren Duran is not in the Red Sox’ starting lineup for Saturday’s game against the Royals.
Tommy Pham will jump into the leadoff spot as Duran takes a seat on Saturday night with lefty Daniel Lynch on the mound for Kansas City. It’ll be Jaylin Davis getting the nod in center field in his place. He should be back in there for Sunday’s series finale to face righty Brad Keller.
