Gray, 29, has a 4.57 ERA over 66 major league appearances between the Athletics, White Sox, Mariners and Cubs, averaging 5.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. He is unlikely to make a significant impact in Minnesota.

The move clears him from the 40-man roster. It was long overdue, as Gray has a rough 5.71 ERA and 26/22 K/BB ratio over 52 innings this season.

Gray had a rough go of it with the Twins in 2012, compiling a 5.71 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 26/22 K/BB ratio over 52 innings of work. He may have a chance to compete for a job in the White Sox bullpen, but remains irrelevant for fantasy purposes.

It’s about time. Gray has been pretty unreliable since the Cubs called him up in mid-April, posting a 6.75 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP in seven relief appearances. He’ll serve as an emergency reliever all year.

Gray, who pitched with the Twins last year, had a 3.27 ERA and 23/12 K/BB ratio over 22 innings in 17 relief appearances with Triple-A Charlotte. The 31-year-old will look for a new opportunity elsewhere.

Gray allowed just one in 4 2/3 innings this spring and went 1-1 with two saves and a 3.38 ERA in his time with Sacramento. He’ll work in middle relief.

Gray has retired the two batters he’s faced on the major league level this season, but the A’s have issues with their offensive depth and had a strong need for an outfielder. Aaron Cunningham replaced him on the 25-man roster.

With only 1/3 of an inning pitched since being recalled last week, Gray was the logical choice to be sent down to make room for Santiago Casilla (knee), who is set to come off the disabled list Friday. to be a move to get Gray more playing time. For what it’s worth, the reliever owns a 0.00 ERA in the bigs this season.

Gray has turned in 1 2/3 scoreless innings during his three stints in the Oakland pen this season.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Gray -- who has pitched just 1/3 of an inning for the A’s this season -- will provide the team with an extra arm for a doubleheader against Texas on Friday.
