According to Baseball America and sources in the Dominican Republic, the Twins are considered the favorites to sign 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Jelfrey Marte.
The switch-hitting shortstop is ranked as the second best international prospect, trailing only fellow countryman Wander Javier, who is expected to sign with the Rays. Marte isn’t eligible to sign officially until July 2 and is expected to receive a signing bonus of around $3 million.

Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports the Twins “still have a shot” to sign Dominican shortstop Jelfry Marte.
Marte had his $3 million dollar deal with the Twins voided after concerns arose over his physical, with reports stating that it was a vision issue. Berardino reports that there are “no hard feelings” between the two parties, and that an agreement still could be worked out. Many considered the 16-year-old shortstop to be the best international position player this summer. After making trades with the Mariners and Angels where they gave up a million dollars in allocated funds to each club, the most they could offer Marte without acquiring money would be $1.25 million.

Ben Badler of Baseball America reports that the Twins have voided their $3 million agreement with Dominican shortstop Jelfry Marte.
Minnesota apparently uncovered a vision issue during Marte’s physical. The speedy 16-year-old is back on the international free agent market and has already begun working out for other teams in the Orlando area. Badler suggests it is “possible Marte could still sign with the Twins for a smaller bonus.”

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports that the Rays have signed Dominican shortstop Jelfry Marte.
Marte previously signed with the Twins for $3 million, but the deal was voided due to a vision issue. Sanchez notes that the Rays only have $440,000 to spend during the current international signing period, so it’s possible they are in the process of acquiring additional funds. LaVelle E. Neal III hears that Marte signed for around $800,000. The 16-year-old Marte is a switch-hitter who is well-regarded for his speed and defense.
