English looked like one of the Giants’ better prospects for a time after being drafted out of high school in 2002, but he’s battled arm problems through the years and is at a lower level of the minors now than he was as a 19-year-old in 2004. Still, he does have to be taken seriously again with a 41/4 K/BB ratio and a .157 average against in 23 2/3 innings as a reliever for the Volcanoes. He might have a future.

English was designated for assignment by San Francisco last week after posting a 7-7 record and 4.20 ERA at Double-A Connecticut. The 24-year-old may need to move to the bullpen in order to crack the major leagues.
