Jesus Lopez went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and a walk Saturday for Guasave of the Mexican Pacific League.
Lopez was set to finish another year with an OPS in the low 600s this year until receiving a surprise promotion to Double-A when Sean Kazmar was brought to the majors. He went on to hit .356/.441/.424 in 59 at-bats with San Antonio. Now the Padres might be forced to put him on the 40-man roster this winter. Lopez, who was signed at 16, just turned 21 last month. He hardly looks like a potential regular shortstop just yet, but there’s plenty of time left for him to improve.
