The 36-year-old Matumoto was considered the ace of Brazil’s national team, but the Jays are just rolling the dice here. “He’s very raw but showed decent velocity,” said Jays scout Sal Butera. “If he develops, it’s worth taking the risk.” If he ever makes it to the majors, it would be a great story.

They did say he was raw. Matumoto, a left-hander from Brazil signed to a minor league deal last month, probably won’t begin the season any higher than Double-A.
