He’s been given an invitation to spring training. Diaz, 27, sports an ugly .226/.358/.294 batting line over seven minor league seasons. He’ll represent depth at Triple-A.

Diaz is now officially off Boston’s 40-man roster. He was 0-for-4 in five games with the Red Sox this season.

The 31-year-old spent the entire 2016 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre where he slashed an anemic .207/.315/.249 with one homer and 25 RBI. He’ll function as organizational infield depth for the Jays.

The trade was announced Wednesday afternoon by the Blue Jays’ Triple-A team in Buffalo. Diaz, 32, was batting just .182 with a .587 OPS in 114 plate appearances there. He’ll join up with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Diaz made four plate appearances this year with the Red Sox. He spent the majority of the summer at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he batted .253/.358/.316 in 101 games.

He’s now off the 40-man roster again. The Jays removed Diaz from the 40-man in order to add Ronald Torreyes.

Diaz was designated for assignment earlier in the week, but passed through waivers unclaimed. He’ll continue to provide organizational depth in the middle infield.

The move clears room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Brad Glenn. He has a good chance of clearing waivers and remaining in the organization.

Diaz was batting .176/.282/.206 in 41 plate appearances this season for the Jays. The versatile 29-year-old should get another shot at some point in 2014.

Diaz drove home two runs with an RBI single in the second inning to put the Jays ahead 3-2, but that would be the extent of their offense on the night. The 28-year-old infielder has been acting as the Jays regular shortstop since Jose Reyes went down with a hamstring injury, and is hitting .250/.333/.250. Outside of deep AL-only leagues, he isn’t relevant.
