Velandia

Velandia didn’t get an at-bat during his three days with the Mets.

Velandia, who turns 30 next month, has always had a pretty good glove, but he hasn’t showed the slightest amount of offensive ability since the A’s traded him to the Mets in 2000. He’s a weak option as a 25th man, and the Pirates shouldn’t have any need of him.

The Rays wanted another infield option with Ben Zobrist done. The light-hitting Velandia will be making his first appearance in the majors since he was with the Mets in 2003.

The homer came 10 years after he debuted with the Padres and ended his 208th career at-bat. He’s 12-for-30 since joining the Rays earlier this month, but it most certainly qualifies as a fluke.

Velandia spent most of September as the Mets’ starting shortstop, but he hit just .190 in 23 games. Glavine went 1-for-7 during what will end up as his only stint in the majors.

Velandia gets bumped off the roster even after hitting .320/.424/.520 in 50 at-bats for the Rays in September. The veteran could be re-signed to a minor league deal.

Velandia, who had been out with a staph infection, isn’t expected to make the Braves as a utilityman.

Velandia is behind Jesse Garcia and perhaps Wilson Betemit in the competiton for a job as a utilityman.

Velandia has had brief stints with both the Blue Jays and Indians this season, going 3-for-15 in 10 games.
