Kelvin Herrera has announced his retirement from baseball.
Herrera had a seven-year period where he was one of the most effective relievers in baseball, having posted a 2.77 ERA with 454 strikeouts over 458 innings to go along with 60 saves from 2012-18. However, it quickly fell apart for him after he signed an $18 million deal with the White Sox before the 2019 season, and now he’s decided to call it a career at the age of 31.

Cubs signed RHP Kelvin Herrera to a minor league contract.
Herrera was released by the White Sox after being designated for assignment on Friday. The right-handed reliever was signed to an $18 million contract by the club, but was a significant disappointment; posting a 6.54 ERA in 59 appearances with the club. Herrera has had success at the highest level, and if right, he could help in a middle-relief role down the stretch.

Kelvin Herrera was torched for three runs over an inning of work Tuesday during Cactus League play versus the Giants.
Herrera fanned the first batter he faced in the third inning before yielding four straight hits and three runs. The former All-Star reliever saw his ERA balloon to 6.14 last season and his first appearance of the spring wasn’t encouraging.

Kelvin Herrera coughed up a solo homer, but managed to preserve a three-run lead against the Tigers on Sunday to record his first save of the year.
Herrera was called upon to close out the White Sox’ season-ending victory over the division-rival Tigers and needed only 18 pitches (12 strikes) to complete the task. He served up a solo homer to Ronny Rodriguez, but that was the only blemish in the frame. The 29-year-old veteran righty finishes the year with a disastrous 6.14 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 53/23 K/BB ratio across 51 1/3 innings of work.

Kelvin Herrera gave up five runs while getting just two outs against the Twins on Tuesday.
Herrera looked like something of a risky signing for the White Sox after missing time last season and losing velocity, but no one saw an 8.00 ERA coming. It’s been so bad that his career ERA has jumped from 2.82 to 3.19.

Herrera missed the last few weeks with an oblique injury. He’ll probably be eased back into high-leverage situations.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Kelvin Herrera (oblique) will make one more rehab appearance Thursday at Triple-A Charlotte.
Herrera will then return to the White Sox bullpen sometime this weekend. The 29-year-old reliever had posted a highly disappointing 7.36 ERA through 38 appearances with Chicago before landing on the injured list July 20 with a right oblique strain. He’ll try to build some momentum for 2020 over what remains of the 2019 campaign.
