Gardner made 12 relief appearances for the Rays last season, but he was removed from the 40-man roster in September. He’ll compete for a bullpen spot this spring.

Gardner, who made a dozen relief appearances for the Rays back in 2002, was due for another oppportunity after posting a 2.01 ERA and eight saves in 22 1/3 IP for Durham. He doesn’t have upside, but he’ll be a better middle reliever than the less polished pitchers the Rays have thrown into the role this year.

Gardner struggled in two of his five appearances for the Rays and had pitched just once in the last 12 days. As many problems as the team has had, he deserved more of an opportunity.
