Mariners purchased the contract of catcher Luis Oliveros from Single-A Inland Empire.
The Mariners just needed a backup catcher for a day, and rather than add one of their better options to the 40-man roster, they went for Oliveros, who can be taken right off the roster at the end of the day. The 23-year-old Oliveros was hitting .232 in the California League.

Mariners sent catcher Luis Oliveros outright to Single-A Inland Empire.
Oliveros was only called up to serve as a No. 2 catcher in Sunday’s game, which Kenji Johjima missed in order to return home to Japan. He may never see the majors again.

Non-roster catcher Luis Oliveros suffered a torn ACL while running in camp.
He could miss the entire season. Oliveros, who appeared briefly for the Mariners in 2006, wasn’t a candidate to crack the major league roster.
