Manager Ron Gardenhire had his lengthy chat with Cristian Guzman after last night’s game, and plans to talk with Luis Rivas today.
The result of the discussion with Guzman was a temporary benching. If Rivas receives the same for ''half-hearted’’ play, Denny Hocking and Chris Gomez will man the middle infield for the Twins against the Angels this weekend.

Luis Rivas received a cortisone shot in his right elbow yesterday and will not be available to play until Wednesday at the earliest.
He has bone chips in the elbow but will try to make it through the playoffs before having cleanup surgery in the offseason. Rivas may start in only one or two games this week.

Luis Rivas (toenails) ran before last night’s game and will likely be available tomorrow night.
He has missed the past 10 days recovering from minor toe surgery. This is very good news for the Twins. Rivas can start at second base and Michael Cuddyer can play third while both Corey Koskie and Terry Tiffee are out with injuries.

Luis Rivas is scheduled to undergo further tests on his injured right elbow.
With Minnesota’s main concern being the playoffs right now, don’t expect Rivas to play much the final week of the season. Augie Ojeda and Mike Cuddyer will fill in at 2B in his absence.

Luis Rivas will work out on his own this afternoon for the first time since he had his two big toenails removed over a week ago.
Rivas should be back in action before the end of the season, although there is no firm timetable for that to occur.

Luis Rivas (toe injury) will not travel with the Twins to Baltimore, but could join the team in Detroit on Thursday.
Rivas obviously won’t play in Minnesota’s next three games against the Orioles, but hopes to be able to return to action later this week.
  • CHC Shortstop
Luis Rivas, who had both his big toenails removed last week, will not join the Twins in Detroit this weekend.
Doctors feel there is still a risk of infection. Rivas hopes to be able to return to action by the middle of next week.
  • CHC Shortstop
Luis Rivas’ sore elbow is still giving him big problems and he might not see any additional action in the series.
He could also be left off the roster for the ALCS. The Twins had hoped to start Rivas behind sinkerballer Carlos Silva on Friday, but that’s not going to happen. They might use Augie Ojeda over Michael Cuddyer.
  • CHC Shortstop
Luis Rivas underwent surgery yesterday to remove three bone chips from his right elbow.
He will be ready for spring training, but he might be with another team by then. The Twins could non-tendered him in December.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said he will rest Luis Rivas today.
Chris Gomez will get the start at second base. Rivas made a baserunning error Monday and yesterday struck out three times in an 0-for-4 day. He’ll work with the hitting instructor today.
