Delcarmen

Delcarmen should be a quality reliever in time, but he’s not ready right now. If the Red Sox want a youngster in their pen, they’re probably better off with Jon Papelbon or Craig Hansen.

Delcarmen, who struck out two of the three hitters he faced, had been sidelined with inflammation near his right thumb.

Delcarmen might have gotten hit in the ankle or foot. He didn’t appear to be seriously injury, but Julian Tavarez came in to replace him.

Delcarmen may get to pitch in some closer games with Mike Timlin out. He’s yet to experience success in the majors, but he’s ready for a legitimate opportunity. He had a 2.12 ERA and a 19/6 K/BB ratio in 17 innings for Pawtucket.

Delcarmen left Saturday’s game after taking a liner off his left leg. He should be fine.

He also gets a spring training invite. Delcarmen, who turns 30 next month, posted a 5.59 ERA and 33/15 K/BB ratio over 38 2/3 innings last season with the Triple-A affiliates for the Mariners and Rangers. The former Red Sox reliever hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2010 as a member of the Rockies and will likely serve as organizational depth.

Delcarmen has yet to give up a run in six innings. The promising right-hander was 3-6 with a 4.68 ERA in 73 innings for Single-A Sarasota after returning from Tommy John surgery in mid-May.

Per MASN Sports’ Roch Kubatko, he will not get a spring training invite. Delcarmen, who turns 31 next month, had a 4.42 ERA and 59/36 K/BB ratio over 57 innings with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate last year and hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2010. At this point, he’s nothing more than organizational depth.

Delcarmen spent the entire 2013 season at the Orioles’ Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk, where he posted a 2.83 ERA and 46/22 K/BB ratio in 54 innings. The 31-year-old hasn’t appeared in a major league game since 2010.

Delcarmen will rejoin the Red Sox after Pawtucket’s season ends next week.
