Jacobs, who hit .329 and slugged .548 in Double-A last year, would be the top catching prospect in most organizations. However, with Mike Piazza and Jason Phillips in the majors and Justin Huber on the way up, the Mets are expected to take a look at him at other positions.

Jacobs, who was hitting .321/.374/.591 while playing a lot of first base in Double-A, will back up Ramon Castro until Mike Piazza is ready to play.

The homer, his ninth, was his only hit in four at-bats against the Braves.

The Marlins had the DH available while playing in Baltimore, but Jacobs started at first base tonight. Joe Borchard was used as the DH.

Jacobs, who was hitting .180 on the day a month ago, has had multiple hits in six of the last eight games, pushing his average up to .259. He’s hitting .419 with three homers in 43 at-bats as a No. 3 hitter.

Wes Helms is back on the bench despite his two-homer game on Wednesday.

That will result in extra playing time for Wes Helms at first base.

Jacobs sat out Wednesday to rest the ankle, but he was available off the bench. The ankle bothers him more in the field than at the plate so he will likely serve as the designated hitter when the Marlins face the Orioles and Yankees next week.

Jacobs got off to a rough start in April, but he picked it up in May and is now batting .408 with four homers so far in June. He’s worth using in all but the shallowest of mixed leagues.
