The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Luke Scott. A former sixth-round pick, Ashley batted .263/.358/.384 with eight homers and 48 RBI between Double- and Triple-A in 2011. He seems likely to clear waivers and remain in the organization.

Ashley cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Rays last week. The 27-year-old backstop batted .263/.358/.384 with eight homers and 48 RBI last season between Double- and Triple-A. He’ll serve as organizational depth in 2012.

He’ll receive a spring training invite. Ashley, 28, has batted .260/.355/.384 over his minor league career and has yet to appear in a big league game.

Ashley, 29, batted .235/.328/.374 with six home runs and 28 RBI over 80 games with the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate this year. He figures to serve as minor league depth with Pittsburgh.

Ashley has yet to see the major league field this season after struggling in limited duty with the Brewers last year. The veteran backstop was hitting just .240/.350/.389 in 167 at-bats for Triple-A Las Vegas prior to the trade. He is unlikely to contribute at the big league level this season.

Lucroy took a foul tip off his mask on Tuesday night. He passed an initial cognitive test but wasn’t feeling too hot when he returned to the visitors clubhouse at Marlins Park on Wednesday. Nevin Ashley is catching for the Brewers in his place Wednesday in Mami. Lucroy could need several days off.

Ashley was hitting .306/.374/.442 with eight homers and 61 RBI over 337 Triple-A at-bats. He might see a few starts, but he’s not a fantasy-relevant backstop.

Ashley was designated for assignment on October 7 and passed through waivers. Rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs, he’ll look for gainful employment elsewhere. The 31-year-old catcher picked up just two hits in 20 at-bats with the Brewers this season. He fared a bit better against inferior pitching, though, as he hit .306/.374/.442 with eight homers and 61 RBI over the course of 94 games at Triple-A.

Ashley, 31, finally made it up to the majors briefly in 2015 with the Brewers after 10 years in pro ball. He’s merely a depth add for the Mets.
