The at-bats of Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon have become appointment TV. He’s not particularly skilled at hitting, but sometimes he’ll steal baseballs or his helmet will fly off. To date, Colon has never hit a home run.
Until now. According to Newsday’s Marc Carig, Colon hit a home run during batting practice that took out a tree branch on its way down. Carig asked hitting coach Kevin Long if Colon homered and Long confirmed. There is no known evidence, other than these accounts, so we’ll have to take their word for it.
Colon, 42, re-signed with the Mets on a one-year, $7.25 million deal over the winter. He pitched 194 2/3 innings last season, compiling a 4.16 ERA with a 136/24 K/BB ratio over 194 2/3 innings. During the postseason, he contributed out of the bullpen.
