Blue Jays sign Rafael Soriano to a minor league deal

Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reported on Sunday that the Blue Jays signed reliever Rafael Soriano to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Soriano, 36, struggled in six appearances with the Cubs last year before succumbing to shoulder woes. He yielded four runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. He was solid in 2014 with the Nationals but had some late-season struggles and eventually ceded the closer’s role to Drew Storen. Now they’re teammates again.

It’s essentially a zero-risk chance for the Jays to catch lightning in a bottle. Their bullpen is already formidable, but if Soriano shows he still has anything left in the tank, he can make even the middle innings tough for their opponents.
