Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald has confirmed that Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan is going to have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee on Wednesday.
Coghlan tore his left meniscus while celebrating a walkoff home run in late July. He was considering a rehab program that would have allowed him to return this year, but surgery is the smarter and safer route. He would have needed a procedure eventually and the Marlins have pretty much fallen out of contention in the National League East.
The 25-year-old Coghlan hit .321/.390/.460 last season and won the National League Rookie of the Year award. He took a step back this year, batting .268/.335/.383 over 358 at-bats, but the Fish will hope for a bounce-back 2011.
