More unfortunate injury news for the Blue Jays.
From beat writer Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com comes word that Toronto catcher J.P. Arencibia suffered a fractured right hand during Wednesday night’s game against the visiting Athletics and will be out of commission for approximately six weeks.
The 26-year-old took a foul tip off the top of his hand in the top of the second inning and was replaced behind the dish by backup catcher Jeff Mathis. It didn’t take long for X-rays to reveal the break.
Arencibia did not make a plate appearance on Wednesday. He’s batting .242 with a .745 OPS, 16 home runs and 50 RBI through 81 games this season. Mathis will presumably become the Jays’ primary backstop.
