Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston reports that Josh Reddick underwent surgery earlier today to repair torn cartilage in his left wrist. The report was confirmed by Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington, according to McDonald’s colleague Gordon Edes.
McDonald writes that Reddick may have suffered the injury when he was hit in the left hand by a pitch during a game against the Rangers on September 4. The 24-year-old outfielder is expected to rest for three weeks before beginning a month-long rehab program, but it shouldn’t have any impact on his availability for the start of spring training.
Reddick batted .280/.327/.457 with seven home runs, 28 RBI and a .784 OPS over 278 plate appearances with the Red Sox this season and was pressed into regular duty after the All-Star break after J.D. Drew proved unproductive and eventually hit the disabled list. He could get a chance at a starting job next season if depending upon what happens with free agent David Ortiz and potential outfield targets like Carlos Beltran, Michael Cuddyer and Grady Sizemore.
