Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Giants may have some competition for the World Series MVP, as “it appears the Marlins have interest in bringing back Edgar Renteria.”
Renteria originally signed with the Marlins out of Colombia as a teenager in 1992 and played the first three seasons of his career in Florida, coming up with the game-winning hit in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series.
Frisaro speculates that he’d be a fallback option at third base should prospect Matt Dominguez prove not ready for the big leagues at age 21. That would be a bigger role than he’d likely have in San Francisco, as reports last week suggested the Giants are offering him around $1 million to return as a utility infielder behind starters Miguel Tejada, Freddy Sanchez, and Pablo Sandoval.
