Chris Young rejoining the Mets has been assumed for a while now and Andy McCullough of the Newark Star Ledger reports that it’s all but a done deal now, as the oft-injured 32-year-old will sign a minor-league contract by the end of this week.
Last season Young signed a one-year, $1.1 million deal with the Mets and made just four starts before undergoing shoulder surgery in May.
He was effective in that brief work, posting a 1.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 24 innings, but Young also made just four starts in 2010 and hasn’t started 20 games in a season since way back in 2007 for the Padres.
Young may need to rehab his shoulder further before returning to game action, but the price is right with a minor-league deal and the 6-foot-10 right-hander could provide some rotation depth in the second half.
