Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports that the Rockies have signed corner infielder Josh Vitters to a minor league contract.

Vitters, 25, is a former top prospect taken third overall by the Cubs in the 2007 draft behind David Price and Mike Moustakas. He made his major league debut in August 2012 but he was never able to gain any traction against big league pitching, posting a .395 OPS in 109 plate appearances. This past season with Triple-A Iowa, Vitters batted a meager .213/.268/.339 in 404 PA.

Vitters still has youth on his side and he won’t be arbitration-eligible until 2018, so this is a low-risk gamble for the Rockies.
