Veteran presence time: the Kansas City Royals signed outfielder Alex Gordon to a one-year, $4 million contract.

Gordon, who will turn 36 before spring training, hit .266/.345/.396 with 13 home runs and 76 RBI over 633 plate appearances with the Royals in 2019. He’s nowhere close to being the hitter he used to be but he still plays decent defense. Won a Gold Glove last year in fact.

Gordon has also spent all 13 years of his major league career with the Royals, and having a leader with some institutional memory and some dang common sense is always a good thing when you’re rebuilding.
