White Sox look to bring Godzilla to Chicago

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the White Sox have “emerged as serious contenders” to sign free agent Hideki Matsui. Even though Matsui posted an 876 OPS last season, won World Series MVP honors and brings in millions of dollars in revenue just by being himself, the Yankees have seemingly made no push to bring him back. It’s left the Angels and now perhaps the White Sox to step in and sign him to fill DH duties. That Matsui is no longer capable of playing the outfield regularly does serve to limit his options. He might be the best pure DH going right now, but several AL squads already have the role filled and most of the rest don’t want to spend millions on a one-dimensional player. The Angels would surely prefer someone who is an option in the outfield once in a while, but they might be willing to overlook that for Matsui. The White Sox are used to carrying a pure DH in Jim Thome, and they may well present the best fit for Matsui if they can come up with the money for him.
