Nick Tanielu hit his fourth spring homer Monday in the Astros’ 6-3 win over the Mets.
The 26-year-old Tanielu figured to be one of the Astros’ earlier cuts this spring, but he’s gotten some extra at-bats with Jose Altuve missing time and he’s really taking advantage. After missing most of 2017, Tanielu hit .288/.336/.418 between Double- and Triple-A last year. Since he’s a little lacking at second base and he’s never played short, he’s going to have a difficult time ever finding a spot in the majors. Still, he’s getting some notice now, which could help his case later.

Astros 3B prospect Nick Tanielu clubbed a career-high five hits Saturday in a win for High-A Lancaster.
He scored two of the JetHawks’ 19 runs and drove in two more. The five-hit effort raised Tanielu’s season average from .320 to .350. That’s tied for fifth-best in the California League. He also ranks eighth in slugging (.534) and 10th in doubles (eight). Lancaster has absolutely crushed Visalia this weekend, outscoring them 33-12 over the last two games.
