Florimon

Florimon deposited an offering from Astros prospect Corbin Martin into the seats for his first homer of the spring. The non-roster invite has a lot of work to do to break camp with the big club, and even then, he’s forgettable for fantasy purposes.

Florimon appeared in 50 games with the NL East rival Phillies this past season and owns a weak .211/.270/.319 batting line in the majors. Still, the 31-year-old offers experience and depth going into camp.

Florimon was sent outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, but he’ll refuse the assignment and hit free agency instead. A career .211/.270/.319 hitter, he’ll try to secure a minor league deal elsewhere this winter.

He’s now off the 40-man roster. Florimon is a career .211/.270/.319 hitter over parts of eight major league seasons.

The Twins now have 38 players on their 40-man roster. Florimon, 24, was claimed off waivers from the Orioles last week. He posted a .267/.344/.396 slash line with eight home runs and 15 steals in 133 games this past year at Double-A Bowie. He’ll be infield depth for the Twins.

Florimon isn’t going to hit -- no way, no how -- but he’s good enough defensively that he’s probably the Twins’ best option at shortstop right now. AL-only leaguers should expect very little, but if he gets enough at-bats, he could have a tiny bit of value.

He’ll take the place of Brian Dozier on the active roster. Florimon, who was claimed off waivers from the Orioles last December, is a .249/.321/.354 hitter over parts of seven seasons in the minors, so we’re not optimistic he’ll be much better.

Florimon left Thursday’s game with a tight right hamstring. He’s already feeling better, but the Twins don’t want to take any chances. Consider him day-to-day for now. Eduardo Escobar will fill in at shortstop Friday and bat ninth.
