Liz had walked 10 batters and allowed 20 hits in 17 1/3 innings this season out of the Pirates’ bullpen, but the 31-year-old right-hander may draw interest on waivers.

He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization. Liz posted a 3.63 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 11 relief appearances for the Pirates before losing his spot on the 40-man roster.

The 30-year-old right-hander hasn’t appeared in the major leagues since the 2009 season, and owns a career 7.50 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over 110 1/3 innings. He’s spent the past three seasons pitching in Korea, most recently posting a 3.06 ERA and leading the Korean Baseball Organization with 188 strikeouts in 202 2/3 innings in 2013. It’s a nice low-risk signing for the Jays.

Liz spent the first seven weeks in the Pirates pen, amassing a 3.63 ERA and an 18/10 K/BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings. In the minors, he was mostly a starter, posting a 1.40 ERA and a 74/24 K/BB ratio in 64 1/3 innings. He’ll go back into middle relief in the majors.

The move will clear a spot for Vance Worley on the 40-man roster. Liz owns a 4.24 ERA and 27/12 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings this season.

The Pirates are intending to use Liz as a reliever, so these two starts he’s gotten this spring are probably more about helping him develop consistency than anything else. He’s allowed two runs in 10 innings.

Liz posted a not-so-great 4.24 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and 27/12 K/BB ratio across 23 1/3 innings this year for the Bucs. It was his first major league season since 2009. He should find some offers on the open market, but they’ll probably of the non-guaranteed minor league contract variety.

Liz will make his major league debut tonight versus the Twins.

Liz took the loss, but he certainly didn’t embarrass himself in his major league debut. Liz allowed four hits, walked three and struck out five. Torii Hunter’s three-run homer with one out in the sixth ruined his chances of having a quality start, but he bounced right back by striking out Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer before calling it a night. Liz could return to the minors tomorrow.
