Seanez strained his right groin late in the spring.

Seanez lives about 90 minutes from San Diego, so if the Padres offer a major league deal, he’ll be very tempted to take it. The 36-year-old Seanez said he’d retire rather than accept a minor league deal.

Florida’s offer isn’t as good as San Diego’s, the South-Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

In addition to his base salary, Seanez would get $50,000 each for 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65 appearances, and $75,000 each for 70 and 75. Seanez’s career high for appearances is 56 (1999) and his next highest total is 39 (2004).

Seanez has a two-week commitment to the Red Sox. After that time, he’ll either be called up or free to demand his release. With both Robert Person and Bob Howry coming back, there probably won’t be room for Seanez in the Red Sox bullpen before the end of the month.

With Seanez and Chris Hammond both on the verge of returning, Clay Hensley may become an emergency starter at some point this week.

Seanez has been out since July 8 with tendinitis in his right shoulder, and left-hander Craig Breslow probably will be returned to Double-A Mobile when he’s activated.

It was probably going to be Seanez’s only rehab appearance, but since he struggled, the Padres could keep him in the minors for now.

Seanez allowed four runs in an inning in his only rehab appearance. Throwing him into a close game right away might not be a good idea.
