White Sox purchased the contract of outfielder Ryan Sweeney from Triple-A Charlotte.
Sweeney would have had to go on the 40-man roster after the season anyway, so there was little harm in bringing him up now. The 21-year-old was batting .296/.350/.452 with 13 homers and seven steals in 14 attempts. He’s not going to get much of a chance to play now, but he’s a future regular for the White Sox.

Ryan Sweeney was lifted from Wednesday’s game after appearing to strain his right hamstring.
Sweeney suffered the injury while trying to beat out a grounder. The 26-year-old is hitting .266/.345/.342 with one home run and 25 RBI through 108 games this season.

Ryan Sweeney has been diagnosed with a strained quad.
Sweeney suffered the injury Wednesday while trying to beat out a groundball. He’s likely to miss the next several games and could even be shut down for the season.

Coco Crisp (ankle) is out of the Athletics’ starting lineup for the fourth straight game Tuesday.
We’re still awaiting word about the results of the MRI on his right foot/ankle, but Crisp was seen wearing a walking boot in the clubhouse after Monday’s game. Ryan Sweeney will make another start in center field Tuesday night.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Thursday that Carl Crawford (wrist) will begin hitting within the next few days.
Crawford was shut down earlier this month due to inflammation in his surgically-repaired left wrist. He began throwing and taking one-handed swings a few days ago, but hitting will obviously be the real test. It’s doubtful he’ll have enough time for be ready for Opening Day, which means Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney figure to open the year in the corner outfield spots.

Ryan Sweeney continued his hot start on Saturday, scoring the only run in Boston’s 1-0 win over the White Sox.
Sweeney finished the night 2-for-4, and had the Red Sox’ only extra-base hit in the game. He’s now batting a blistering .391 on the year, and looks firmly entrenched as the number two hitter in manager Bobby Valentine’s lineup. While Sweeney doesn’t offer much in the way of power or speed, he’s still a valuable asset as a fourth or fifth outfielder in deeper mixed leagues.

Ryan Sweeney was pulled from Monday’s Grapefruit League game against the Marlins with a left quad strain.
Sweeney was 0-for-1 in the contest and is now 1-for-12 for the spring. The 26-year-old is expected to see a considerable chunk of the playing time in right field this year in Boston after being acquired alongside Andrew Bailey in a December trade with the A’s. This quad issue may set Sweeney back a couple of days, but it’s still early enough for him to heal in time for the start of the season.

Carl Crawford is still experiencing left elbow soreness and will visit Dr. James Andrews.
Uh-oh. Crawford began playing in extended spring training games last week after straining his elbow earlier this month, but he has apparently suffered some sort of setback. Just because he’s visiting Dr. Andrews doesn’t mean he will ultimately require surgery, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be able to make it back in early May as previously estimated. Stay tuned.

Ryan Sweeney went 4-for-8 with his 10th RBI in Sunday’s 17-inning loss to the Orioles.
His batting average has not dropped below .354 all year, and now stands at .368. His only blemish is a surprisingly skewed 18/4 K/BB ratio.

Carl Crawford (wrist) has yet to be cleared to swing a bat.
“I think it should be pretty soon,” said Crawford, who had surgery last month to remove cartilage from his left wrist. “I definitely feel good about it. Once me and the trainers talk about it and both feel good about it, it should be pretty soon. I definitely want to be back on the field as soon as possible, so I want to channel my feelings and make sure I do the right thing.” Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said last week that he wouldn’t be surprised if Crawford misses the first few weeks of the season, but the high-priced outfielder said Monday that he still hopes to be ready for Opening Day. Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney would man the corner outfield spots if the Red Sox decide to play it safe.
