Carroll

Carroll, a former third-round pick of the Reds, posted a 3.29 ERA in 41 innings last season between the rookie-level Appalachian League and Double-A Southern League. He was busted for PED use in September 2008.

Carroll allowed three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief during a short stay with the White Sox earlier this season. He is now off Chicago’s 40-man roster.

The White Sox sent Carroll outright to Triple-A last week. He saw minimal major league work with the Sox this season, throwing just 2 1/3 frames. In 36 2/3 innings last season, he held a 3.44 ERA and 27/13 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 frames. He could see time with the Rangers later this season depending on when they need an extra arm.

Carroll holds a 12.27 ERA at Charlotte this season but has plenty of big league experience from the last two years. He’ll pitch in middle relief.

He’ll be joined by Anthony Ranaudo, who was just acquired from Texas. Carroll fell flat against the Rangers on Tuesday (1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 ER) but bounced back by throwing a scoreless inning the next day. The veteran right-hander should get another shot with the White Sox later this year.

Carroll has already begun making starts at Triple-A Iowa. He opened the 2017 season in independent ball and caught the attention of the Cubs after registering a 2.94 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 98 innings (15 starts) for the Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association.

Carroll has registered a solid 3.12 ERA across 17 1/3 innings this season out of the Chicago bullpen. The 30-year-old right-hander will fill a long relief role.

Chris Beck will replace him on the roster for Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Orioles. Carroll has posted a 3.12 ERA and 7/7 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings this season in a middle relief role.

The White Sox will announce a corresponding roster move Friday. Carroll has a 3.28 ERA and 15/9 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings with the big club this season. He should get another shot before long.

Carroll has given up six runs in three straight starts, so his time in the White Sox rotation should be at end. Charlie Leesman could be next in line, unless management wants to go back to Erik Johnson already.
