The Jays are clearing room on the 40-man roster for Juan Abreu, who was claimed off waivers. Richmond, who holds a 5.89 ERA in 24 games -- 22 starts -- at Triple-A this season, should clear waivers and remain in the organization.

Richmond cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last Friday. The 32-year-old right-hander allowed two runs over three innings in a brief stint with the Blue Jays earlier this summer and has a 5.89 ERA in 24 games at the Triple-A level this year.

Richmond allowed a pair of runs over three innings in his short stint with the big club. He’ll return to a 5.46 ERA and 71/28 K/BB ratio at Triple-A. A corresponding move will be announced Thursday.

Richmond could have accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas, but he wants to see if he can find a club that will give him a shot at a big league roster spot. The 33-year-old allowed two runs over three innings in a short stint with the Blue Jays this past season.

Richmond had been pitching with the Lotte Giants of the Korean Baseball Organization. The 33-year-old right-hander is set to report to extended spring training and will serve as organizational depth.

Richmond made 24 starts for the Blue Jays back in 2009, but he’s mostly been in the minors since then. He’s struggled the last two years at Triple-A, posting a 7.33 ERA in 2011 and 5.61 ERA this past season.

The 34-year-old hurler made 20 starts for Triple-A Round Rock in 2013, compiling a 5.91 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 56/45 K/BB ratio over 112 2/3 innings. He’s nothing more than organizational depth at this point.

Richmond has been a pleasant story this year, and it continued tonight with an excellent outing in which he allowed just six hits and two walks while fanning eight. Both runs came on solo homers. Richmond is now 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA and is holding opponents to a .234 average.
