Other clubs passed on signing Reynolds because of velocity issues. This first game, which will be played in a tiny stadium, isn’t one where you would want Reynolds active.

Manager Bob Brenly agreed. “It’s something we can easily correct,” he said. Unfortunately, Brenly can do nothing about the fact that Reynolds can’t throw harder than 85-87 mph these days.

Both pitchers are expected to undergo physicals today. It’s believed that Reynolds will make at least $1 million even though he had a 5.43 ERA for the Braves last season.

Reynolds, out with rotator cuff tendinitis, could rejoin the Diamondbacks early next month.

Reynolds is on track to begin a rehab assignment May 17 at Triple-A Tucson.

Coach Bob Brenly on the matter: “It’s going to be a while until he builds up his arm strength that we can even consider letting him throw batting practice or simulated games.” The D-Backs rotation could use help, but Reynold’s won’t be the answer.

''There was some fatigue in there, so we shut him down on Tuesday and started throwing him again on Thursday,’' manager Bob Brenly said. A two-day shutdown isn’t a huge deal. Reynolds’ rehab assignment, which was to begin May 17, could be pushed back a couple days.

The team hasn’t decided whether Reynolds will pitch for Triple-A Tucson or Double-A El Paso.
