Angels signed INF Shawn O’Malley to a minor league contract.
O’Malley, 26, owns a .248/.343/.317 batting line over eight seasons in the minors, but has some speed and is capable of playing both middle infield positions. That could give him a chance to eventually make his way to the majors.
  • MLB Center Fielder #17
Leonys Martin left Wednesday’s game against the A’s with a tweaked left hamstring.
Martin was replaced in center field by Shawn O’Malley to start the fourth inning. Prior to leaving with what the Mariners are deeming a minor injury, Martin had continued his recent hot-hitting ways with a third-inning RBI single and a stolen base. Seattle is labeling him day-to-day.
  • COL Shortstop #73
Shawn O’Malley is starting at shortstop and batting ninth for the Mariners on Saturday.
He gets the challenge of facing Jays’ knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. With Ketel Marte on the disabled list, the door is open for O’Malley to see some extra time in the infield over the next week or so.
  • AZ 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte will be placed on the disabled list after being diagnosed with mononucleosis.
Now it makes more sense why he’s missed a week of action with what had been described as a stomach bug. Marte shouldn’t need much more than another week before being activated. Shawn O’Malley and Luis Sardinas will share shortstop in his absence.
  • COL Shortstop #73
Shawn O’Malley is out of Monday’s lineup against the Tigers due to illness.
O’Malley is battling a cold and should be back to normal in the next day or so. Mike Freeman will start in his place at shortstop on Monday.
  • AZ 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte (flu) is out again Tuesday.
Marte returned to the Mariners’ lineup Sunday after missing a game with an ankle injury, but he came down with a stomach virus on Monday. Consider him day-to-day still. Shawn O’Malley is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff Tuesday versus White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.
  • AZ 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte is out of Monday’s lineup due to illness.
Marte returned to the lineup Sunday after suffering a mild ankle injury, but now he’s under the weather. It’s unclear whether he’ll be available off the bench, but it’s a day-to-day situation. Shawn O’Malley will start in his place at shortstop.
  • COL Shortstop #73
Shawn O’Malley went 3-for-5 with a solo home run in Thursday’s 11-inning loss to the Red Sox.
O’Malley’s solo home run off Drew Pomeranz in the fifth inning was the Mariners’ only extra-base hit in the extra-inning affair. He also notched a pair of singles on the evening. Through 127 at-bats, the 28-year-old shortstop is slashing .244/.309/.339 with one home run (Thursday’s solo shot was his first of the season and just the second of his career), 10 RBI and four steals.
  • AZ 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte (thumb) is not in the Mariners’ lineup Sunday.
Marte left Saturday’s game when he sprained his left thumb and could require a disabled list stint, although the club hasn’t announced a move to this point. Shawn O’Malley is at shortstop for the M’s on Sunday. Seattle also has Steve Clevenger at catcher over Chris Iannetta.
  • AZ 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte was scratched from the Mariners’ lineup Tuesday because of neck spasms.
It doesn’t sound like anything serious. Shawn O’Malley is now starting at shortstop and batting ninth Tuesday night against Indians right-hander Cody Anderson.
