Mets optioned RHPs Grant Hartwig and Josh Walker to Triple-A Syracuse; Optioned OF Alex Ramirez to Double-A Binghampton; Re-assigned LHP Nate Lavender, OF Taylor Kohlwey and RHP Chad Smith to minor league camp.
There are no big surprises among this batch of cuts for the Mets, though Hartwig, Walker and Smith are all likely to see action out of the Mets’ bullpen at some point during the upcoming 2024 season. Hartwig, 26, made 28 appearances for the Mets during the 2023 season — posting a 4.84 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 30/15 K/BB ratio across 35 1/3 innings of work.
  • NYM Left Fielder #38
Mets signed OF Taylor Kohlwey to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 29-year-old lefty has played seven seasons in the minors with a .282/.371/.418 slash line. He’s appeared in just five MLB games, all with the Padres this past season. Kohlwey spent most of his season in Triple-A, blasting 12 home runs while swiping 15 bases, showcasing some power and speed. One odd split to note in 2023 was that his batting average at home was just .248 (.297 on the road) and his SLG was .374 at home (.484 on the road).
  • FA Left Fielder #38
    Padres non-tendered OF Taylor Kohlwey.
The 28-year-old Kohlwey got into five games for the Padres, going 2-for-13. He’s a fine Triple-A player, but it seems unlikely that he’ll have much of a career in the majors.
  • SD Outfield
Padres optioned OF Taylor Kohlwey to Triple-A El Paso.
Kohlwey was just promoted after the All-Star break, but he’ll head back to Triple-A as the Padres require an extra catcher and summoned Brett Sullivan from Triple-A. He should get another opportunity with the big league club before long.
  • SD Outfield
Padres selected the contract of OF Taylor Kohlwey from Triple-A El Paso.
Kohlwey receives his first call up ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Blue Jays after batting .261/.377/.437 with nine homers and 10 steals across 328 plate appearances this season for Triple-A El Paso. The 28-year-old outfielder was a 21st-round selection back in 2016.
