Cubs selected Clemson outfielder Tyler Colvin with the 13th pick in the draft.
Baseball America called it the surprise of the first round. Colvin is a toolsy outfielder with a limited history of success. He might be a legitimate center fielder defensively, but his bat -- especially when it comes to power -- is in question.

Michael Cuddyer is not in Monday’s lineup against the Dodgers.
Just a routine day off. Tyler Colvin will make the start in right field and bat seventh against right-hander Aaron Harang.

Tyler Colvin stayed hot by going 2-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday’s loss to the Dodgers.
Colvin started at first base and then moved to center field after Dexter Fowler (blurred vision) left. Over Colvin’s last 18 at-bats, he’s now hitting .388 with two homers and five RBI. There’s some NL-only appeal here, especially if Fowler misses time.

Tyler Colvin stayed hot Thursday, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI against the Padres.
Colvin came into the game hitting .333 in Cactus League play and now has his average up to .387 over 29 at-bats. He’s homered and tripled once, doubled three times and driven in nine runs. Colvin had a disastrous 2011 season and won’t start for the Rockies, so you should take a wait-and-see approach with him in NL-only leagues.

Tyler Colvin went 0-for-3 in Monday’s loss to the Mariners, but will finish his spring with a .385/.419/.631 triple slash.
They’re huge numbers for a player who needed something to build on after hitting .150/.204/.306 in 2011, and could put some early-season heat on Dexter Fowler if he struggles out of the gate. Colvin’s worth monitoring in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.
  • MLB Center Fielder #28
Dexter Fowler is not in the Rockies’ starting lineup for the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Pirates.
Tyler Colvin will make the start in center field and bat second against James McDonald. Fowler should return to the lineup for the second half of the double-dip.
  • NYM Outfield #23
Michael Cuddyer (toe) is not in Friday’s lineup against the Brewers.
Cuddyer suffered a bruised left big toe after fouling a ball off his foot Wednesday. It doesn’t appear to be anything serious, but the Rockies are giving him some extra rest just to make sure. Tyler Colvin will make the start in right field Friday and bat seventh.

Getting the start in place of Carlos Gonzalez, Tyler Colvin went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Saturday.
Combine a nice 5-for-11 start with his big spring and Colvin is making a case for starts in center field over Dexter Fowler. He’s worth picking up in NL-only leagues.
  • MLB Outfield #27
Carlos Gonzalez (strep throat) is not in the Rockies’ lineup Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
Gonzalez was replaced by Tyler Colvin, who will play left field and hit sixth. Rockies manager Jim Tracy said that it’s doubtful he would use Gonzalez as a pinch hitter in the game, though the 26-year-old will be in the dugout.

Carlos Gonzalez (strep throat) is out of the lineup for the third straight day Monday.
CarGo played through the illness Friday, but the Rockies are hopeful he’ll get well with the extended rest. He’s available to pinch-hit Monday and expects to play Tuesday. Tyler Colvin will continue to take his place in left field.
