Colts agreed to terms with No. 139 overall pick DT Montori Hughes on a four-year contract.
Hughes comes with some baggage, but he is naturally gifted. Hughes was dismissed from Tennessee for failing two drug tests, and then transferred to UT-Martin. He’ll compete for a roster spot along a crowded Colts defensive line.

Colts traded up to select Tennessee-Mart DT Montori Hughes with the No. 139 overall pick, sending a 2014 fourth-round pick to the Browns.
Hughes (6-4, 329) failed two drug tests at Tennessee, and wound up at UT-Martin for his final two seasons. He compiled 42 tackles — 8.5 for a loss — with four sacks as a senior. Hughes ran 5.23 at the Combine to go along with a 1.83 ten-yard split — below average measurables even for a hefty defensive tackle. He’ll develop as a reserve along the Colts’ increasingly crowded defensive line.

Colts placed DT Montori Hughes (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
A fifth-round pick, Hughes was limited to just 72 snaps this season as a reserve defensive lineman. The Colts signed LB Alan Baxter to replace him on the active roster.

Montori Hughes, Zach Kerr, Jeris Pendleton and Kelcy Quarles will all be “in the mix” for Colts nose tackle snaps behind Josh Chapman.
“We have to get stronger up the middle,” said GM Ryan Grigson. Kerr played 289 snaps last season to Hughes’ 228. The others were non-factors. Indianapolis could have made a play for Vince Wilfork in free agency, but decided to address other needs. The Colts won’t be able to make the next step without solidifying their run defense. The Patriots expose it on a yearly basis.
